World Heart Day 2020

World Heart Day is observed on 29 September every year. Endorsed by the World Heart Federation, this special day celebrates the significance of the human heart and aims to protect it from ailments.

The motto of the World Heart Day is to keep your heart in good health and make it survive longer. This year, the World Heart Federation has themed its proposition of using the heart to beat cardiovascular disease (CVD) during the ongoing pandemic.

This article illuminates this proposition and discusses the ways of protecting your heart against cardiovascular disease.

What is Cardiovascular Disease?

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) refers to the ailments subject to the heart, brain, and blood vessels. As per scientific research and medical reports of the World Health Organization, CVD is the world’s most dangerous killer, causing over 1.79 million deaths each year.

Out of these 1.79 million values, 80% are from coronary heart disease (heart attacks). Moreover, this killer disease mostly affects the low-income group countries where people are unable to get a proper diagnosis and treatment of their cardiac distress.

Risk Factors for Cardiovascular Disease

CVD engenders potential risk factors that can cause havoc to your health. These risk factors may be modifiable or non-modifiable in nature. Here is an outline of inherent risk factors pertaining to CVD.

Modifiable Risk Factors

These factors can be modified with respect to changing dietary habits and lifestyle. Some of the modifiable risk factors for CVD are as follows:

  • Obesity

  • High blood pressure

  • Unhealthy diet

  • Physical inactivity

  • Tobacco consumption

  • Smoking

  • High Cholesterol

Non-modifiable Risk Factors

Non-modifiable risk factors include those factors which are inherent to a person and cannot be changed with a change in diet or lifestyle. Here is a list of non-modifiable risk factors related to CVD:

  • Diabetes

  • Family history

  • Gender (especially in men and pre-menopausal women)

  • Age (especially after the age of 55)

  • Socio-economic status (especially those belonging to low-income groups or underdeveloped countries)

  • Ethnicity (especially including people of African and Asian ancestry )

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Stressful lifestyle

  • Social isolation

Warning Signs for Cardiovascular Disease

It is important to be aware of the warning signs which may expose you to CVD. Despite the fact that cardiac arrests are sudden, still many people suffer from potent pre-attack symptoms which they tend to ignore.

Here are the pertinent warning signs which you should consider to avail a timely treatment before getting an actual heart attack:

  • Chest discomfort

  • Shortness of breath

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Light-headedness

  • Body fatigue especially around the arms, back, stomach, neck, and jaw regions

  • In addition to pre-symptomatic signs, there are symptoms that directly signal a medical stroke. These signals are:

  • Partial blindness or a blackout for few moments

  • Trouble in standing, walking, and speaking

  • Severe headache

  • Sudden numbness in the entire body

  • Dizziness or loss of coordination and balance

Individuals encountering any of the aforementioned signs should seek medical assistance at the earliest. They should get in touch with their local medical helpline number and get admitted to a hospital.

Remain Updated about Cardiovascular Disease

In order to avoid experience cardiac arrest symptoms and signals, it is better to update yourself with the potential risks of CVD. The best method to do this is to take a medical consultation and get yourself examined for the following:

  • Blood glucose levels (around 60% of heart attacks happen due to high sugar levels of the patients)

  • Blood pressure

  • Cholesterol

  • Body Mass Index (BMI)

Apart from the above, it is important to understand the symptoms which you may experience while getting a heart attack. To maintain extra caution, talk to your family members as nearly 70% of the attacks take place at home.

Thus, if anyone in your family is at CVD risk, consult a healthcare specialist. Get yourself familiarized with local cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) courses so as to help your family members in the moment of crisis.

Altogether, A World Heart Day remains incomplete without a safe and healthy heart. It is time to protect your heart from cardiovascular diseases and stay fit and active throughout your life.
